Regenerative Medicine: Science & Regulation

A clear boundary between laboratory findings, early human research and approved clinical care.

Exosomes, perinatal tissues and several cell populations are being investigated in regenerative medicine. Their biological promise has not established safe and effective treatment for chronic pain, osteoarthritis, neuropathy or neurodegenerative disease.

01

What is being studied

Investigators study extracellular vesicles and various cell products to understand cell signaling, inflammatory pathways and tissue responses. Manufacturing practices, product characterization, doses, routes and protocols differ substantially.

02

What has not been demonstrated

Laboratory and animal findings cannot establish human clinical benefits. For the conditions often marketed in regenerative medicine, regulatory authorization and rigorous human trials remain central to demonstrating benefit and characterizing risk.

03

Regulation matters

FDA oversight may be required for clinical use or investigation. A product being sold by a supplier, or a study being listed on ClinicalTrials.gov, does not prove approval or permission to administer it. Florida law also imposes specific obligations on certain stem-cell practices.
